When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough head to Outer Space

The house was quiet.

I was enjoying the time to sip my coffee and get a few things done.

Hayden was at school and the little kids had, in their minds, done their mandatory time outside in the cold and were now being rewarded with some time watching their new favorite new show, ‘Bubble Guppies’.

Moments like these are few and far between and I just relish them when they come.

I breathed in the silence and took a sip of coffee when suddenly…

BEEP!

BEEP!

BEEP!

The noise followed by the screams of my children cause me to choke, sputter and couch up my coffee. I set my cup down and walked in the the living room to find Quinn covering his ears, Jake running around in a circle screaming and Claire looked like she was about to cry.

“THE IS A TEST OF THE EMERGENCY BROAD CAST SYSTEM….”

I now understood what was going on but unfortunately my children did not. I found the remote and muted the TV so that at least that noise would stop.

“Boys and Girls!” I said at the top of my voice to be heard over top their screams, “Its alright. Please stop screaming.”

They all looked at me and the screaming stopped but Quinn, still unsure, kept his hands over his ears.

“Everything is fine,” I began but was not able to finish because Jake chimed him.

“Momma!” he said eyes wide as saucers looking from me to the silenced TV, “it is time to get into our space ship and go to outer space?”

As my brain processed what he said, I could only laugh because I was pretty sure the sarcastic statement of, “Sure, Jake. Let me get the family rocket out of the closet,” would be lost on him.

  1. Ok, first? Why do they always do that during the good programs? And second? Kids say the craziest things!

  5. Isn’t it funny how we’ve become used to those emergency broadcast interruptions? One day, I’m really going to freak out when there is an actual emergency announced after those obnoxious beeps.

Seriously guys, is this how it’s gonna work in the apocalypse? ‘Cause that’ll just be sad for me.

  10. That’s really cute that he thinks we all have rockets to blast off to outer space in. But I totally would have laughed too and probably could not have restrained the sarcastic comment.

    • I only refrained because he would have thought I was serious and then ran to the closet to find the rocket and when it wasn’t there, there would have been tears.

I didn’t really want to deal with the tears.

  11. That reminds me of the time I had our emergency weather radio in the bedroom (I’m a freak about bad weather/mostly tornadoes!) and the alarm went off at 2am… get this… for a frost warning in our area. I thought my husband would kill me or get the family rocket out of the closet and blast me to outer space!!LOL

P.S. I don’t have triplets but I do have a sweet Claire (love that name!). She’s my baby and is now 8… how sad is that!

    HIlarious!!! Simply hilarious!

  13. When we saw 2012 in theatre, I TOTALLY thought those big things everyone was piling into were spaceships…til I realized they had anchors…to float…duh.

2 things…Bubble Guppies–love them. 2nd–only one of my boys freaks when the screen turns red and the low alarm sounds…he did right up until age 9. Now he just shuts off the radio/tv when it comes on…I think he thinks if the end is near, he doesn’t want to just be sitting around waiting for it, might as well catch him by surprise lol

Where did the spaceship idea come from btw? Too funny.

    • Jake is one random dude but rockets and space ships have always sorta been his thing. It stems back from the days of Little Einsteins.

  14. What an imagination!

When I was a kid those would go off all the time because of tornado warnings. And then I’d go sit in the bathtub for an hour.

  16. Ok, first, the name Bubble Guppies makes me happy. As I am no longer a nanny, I had to look it up. I think I might make that my new mantra. Bubble guppy bubble guppy bubble guppy… it’s pleasant.

Second, I love Jake. He has a fascinating brain. It might be because he reminds me a little of John, but still… that kid rocks (as do they all):)

  17. I hate those testing things. They are so loud and my son is always like, “Are we having a tornado?” The sad thing is, he WANTS a tornado to come, because he’s nuts.

  18. Where does one buy a family sized rocket? My kids do the same thing and lucky for us, we live right on the edge of two cable service areas so we get the tests for both of them!

  23. That is awesome…that sound IS grating, but going to Outer Space? I’d have to reconsider for the Bahamas! :)
