Welcome to Club Puma

by Jen on March 12, 2010

I had an interesting epiphany last night and I thought it would be interesting to share as we all enter the weekend.

Last night, some girl friends and I went out to dinner. The drinks were flowing and there was laughter all around. We were having a great time telling stories about work, sharing frustrations about our husbands and kids and just eating food with out anyone wanting a bite or needing mommy to do something for them.

We were out and women and not a mommies. It was really great.

Since we were out as women, there was something else going on too. We were flirting with the cute young thang that was our server. And he was enjoying every minute of it. (And I am going to say it was not because he wanted a big fat tip.)

Then that flirting brought on more talk about all the cute young guys around us. We starting naming names. We stared fantasizing about them, shirtless and maybe some even pantless.

And suddenly, it was very hot in there. Like need a cold shower hot.

But as quickly as the subject matter started, it changed to something else. Which was probably a good thing because it would have been bad if one of us had gotten arrested for lewd behavior.

I wanted to stay on this subject matter for just a few more minutes because something hit me.

We are pumas*.  We are all in our 30’s. We all are married with kids. We are all good looking women and we all were flirting and lusting over younger men.

I guess its official. We have now welcomed ourselves into club puma. The only thing left to say now is,

Meeeow!

*If you have no idea what a puma is then here is a definition.

The Puma is a woman in her 30’s who takes good care of herself and presents an interesting, confident image to the world coming from her own self-assurance deep inside. She may attract many men younger than herself. But she knows it’s not about age, it’s about happiness and inner joy.

Hahaha just as long as you awesome pumas don’t take away the men in their 20s from the women (ahem, ME!) in our 20s! :-)

Just this once I will overlook it ;-)

It is good for the the mommy soul. We always mean to get together more often but it ends up being like once every 6 months. For shame. Why is it so hard for mommies to take care of the woman part of them?

I’m hosting a mommy/wifey night tonite I look forward to it. I’m planning on pulling out the margarator!
Ahhh the puma. Did ya know after puma you graduate to cougar, than after cougar comes mountain lion?
My favorite is the gerbil: a younger woman seeking older men.

I love these little useless tidbits.

I knew about the cougar, in fact I plan on being one but I had no idea about the gerbil. I guess I lost my chance on that one.

Wait, Jeff is older than me by 4 years. Maybe I was a gerbil but didn’t know know it.

it still seems odd to consider there are “men who are younger” than me. since i still feel like i just graduated college…

… not delivered 3 babies and drive a minivan and have to color my hair.

I’m part of a triplet group and all the moms love to get together for dinner one night a month. I remember one time, there was a group of about 10 of us, and after we’d all had a glass of wine, we were joking around with our adorable waiters. Emphasis on the word ADORABLE. They were visibly flirting with several of our (hot) moms and at one point, someone mentioned that everyone of us sitting at the table had TRIPLETS. So across the 10 of us, we had birthed AT LEAST 30 children (because some of us had more than three.)

Suffice to say, that promptly concluded the flirt sessions, probably because the guys were trying to imagine our stretch marks. But it sure was fun while it lasted. :)

When is the demarcation of puma to cougar? Is it the big 4-0? I want a word that describes a self-assured married woman of a particular age (over 30, but under 50) who likes to flirt without intent to hunt, corner and pounce. Flirting can be fun and a great confidence booster! Sounded like a great night out. I’m in need of one too!

I think I am sadly just a mom in my 30s. No Puma here. Some day i will hopefully have selfesteem enough to be seen as a cougar ;)
