Kids Make the Darndest Things: Sometimes, I Don’t See

by Jen on June 3, 2010

“Mommy, mommy, mommy!”

Claire came running into the kitchen with her drawing flying in the wind behind her.

“Look at what I make!” She said with a beaming smile.

I got down on her level and looked at her picture like I was seeing a brilliant work of art by the most famous artist in the world.

“Very nice, Claire. You did a very good job. Can you tell me what it is about?”

Claire looked at me with a big smile and said, “It is a Princess and a girl. They go to a castle. See the pretty castle? The princess live there with her girl. And sometimes they play with doggies.  See, mommy?”

But you see, I didn’t really see. I sort of saw. I mean I tried to see but that picture sort of looked like another picture she made earlier in the week, only she said it was butterflies, butterflies flying in the sky.

Oh well, it doesn’t really matter what she says the picture is. I love that she loves to draw and I love to try and see what she sees.

I think she and my G have kindred artist spirits. He draws and colors much the same way. I quite like her ‘butterflies!’

Love her stories behind the pictures! And they are so colorful! I am hoping Sadie comes tomorrow from school with something so I can link up! She hasn’t been doing much at home except coloring books.

I love hearing kids’ explanations behind their artwork. So funny.

When I save my own kids’ drawing, I often write on the back what the picture is supposed to be.

Exactly the reason why I always have to ask Maddy what her picture is about, they all look the same, and I hate guessing wrong and making her feel bad. I love that Kids can SEE these things in their art. Those really are butterflies and a princess to her eyes.

This cracks me up because my Little One is the same way … he has elaborate stories and details and this whole world and I see a bunch of squiggly lines.

I wish D would tell more stories. When she does, they crack me up, but she prefers me to be the storyteller.
