About four years ago, Jeff and I were sitting on the couch watching Food Network on TV because I had control of the remote and I love that channel, when a short order cook came on and began to make a smiley face on his pancakes with the batter.
“I could do that,” Jeff said.
I just looked at him sleepily, “Ok sure, honey” I said to make him be quiet so that I could watch the show.
“I totally could,” he said again.
I smiled at him and little did I know that from that moment on our pancakes would never be the same.
The next Saturday morning, Jeff began experimenting with how to make designs on our pancakes and would forever be known as Captain Awesome-Pancake.
This is not the first time, I have talked about how Jeff makes pancakes. There have been a few posts over the years. And back when I was a baby blogger, I even made a crude post on how to make them.
But I have always wanted to remake that post and do a video tutorial.
So that is just what I did.
Step 1: Get out pancake mix.
Step 2: Sift it. This is very important, you want a smooth batter for easy piping.
Step 3: Mix up the batter.
Step 4: Separate a small amount of batter into a smaller bowl. If you want multiple colors, use multiple small bowls.
Step 5: Add color to bowls. Any food coloring will do, a melted crayon will probably not work and taste badly.
Step 6: Put colored batter into small plastic bags.
Step 7: Seal bags and push down to the corner of the bag
Step 8: Gather bag and twist the bag, you are making a piping bag.
Step 9: Snip a small corner off of the end of the bag.
Step 10: Pipe out what ever designer your children would like. You are only limited by the imagination of children.
Step 11: Cover design with plain pancake batter
Step 12: Pipe another design, Jeff usually does the letter of the child’s name, on the non-cooking side while it cooks
Step 13: Flip that baby over and cook it on the other side.
Step 14: Transfer to a plate
Step 15: Eat and become your child’s favoritest pancake maker ever!
So there now you know how the cool kids make pancakes.

so cool! I always make shapes (I have silicone thingies that do it for me!) and we have STOCK in sprinkles because my little cousins LOVE sprinkles in their pancakes! Just you WAIT until I make them cool things like this-they’ll never want to go home
{on second thought…maybe I won’t make them…ha!}

Those are liver and gallbladder pancakes. Jeff’s mom was diagnosed with cancer in that area and when she had surgery to remove the tumor, he made those with the kids to explain her cancer/surgery. Weird looking I know, but the sentiment is sweet.

All these years we’ve been doing it wrong! My husband and I were pretty impressed with ourselves for creating all sorts of shapes in our pancakes but THIS! This is AWESOME! Any guesses what I’m making for dinner tonight?!

This is seriously brilliant. I love the Angry Birds pancake so much so that I may even want to try it. I have a feeling, however, that there is no way I could be as successful as your husband. What a great “how to”!

He has have many, many years of practice. In the beginning he made simple shapes like hearts and faces. The ‘advanced’ stuff came later.

I will make smiley face pancakes every so often like my mom used to. It drove my husband crazy – that genius could NOT figure our how I did it. I love the food coloring idea. Once this kid is born and eating pancakes…game on!
That Angry Bird pancake is A+ awesomesauce.

I loved this! For some reason, the music and the fast-moving action made me giggle the entire time!
It was super helpful to actually see how it’s done (even though I remember you posting about this before). Jeff makes it look so easy! And you can tell he’s very serious about all this designer pancake-making business.
I can’t wait to make these for my kids! They’ll totally love them!

This amazing. Although I am running away from these pics very quickly. If my DS sees that angry birds one I am doomed!

I like the previous commenter’s idea about making them for a pancake supper! Because, to be honest, most mornings pancakes themselves seem like too much effort. My poor children:p

Awesome, awesome, awesome!! I will have to try this soon and get back to you on how it goes.

So fancy! My husband is the pancake maker at our house, but he doesn’t make any cute ones.
His mother told me a story once about catching him at 5 years old in the kitchen making pancakes for all his buddies in the neighborhood. I suppose after that many years of making them, he should have them down pat.
