ba-dunk ba-dank
I sat up in bed with a smile. “Jeff. Jeff. Wake up, your phone is going off.” I shook his shoulder as I repeated my statement.
“Wake up! Your phone!”
Jeff began to stir and said some muffled words that I couldn’t understand when the phone alerted us that there was another message waiting.
This seemed to get Jeff’s attention. He threw back the covers, grabbed his phone and ran out of the room.
“Does this mean he is online? Can you catch him?” I asked Jeff following him into the kitchen.
“Yes, hopefully.” Jeff said as he open his laptop and began the process of logging into work.
For the past few days, Jeff had been on a mission.
Jeff is the manager of the IT department for his company and he had been getting complaints that their internet had been slow. His mission was to find out why so for a while he had been monitoring the internet traffic of the company and he stumbled onto an employee doing something at work that is just not appropriate.
Jeff found that at one of the public computers in the manufacturing section of the building was being used for surfing porn sites. This was not only sucking up precious bandwidth but also opening up the company for lawsuits for a hostile work environment. Not to mention, its just plain wrong.
Jeff had to figure out who was doing this and prove that he was so that the person could be stopped and punished. So Jeff set up his own little sting operation and of course, I got totally sucked into it.
Jeff set up alerts to go to his phone for when the person got on line and hit the porn sites. Jeff not only hoped to get screen shots for evidence but also hoped to be able to see the person the by logging into the company’s security cameras.
It was really exciting to see Jeff work. His fingers seems to dance across the keyboard as he opened up all the different programs. I felt like we were like detectives on CSI, trying to make the evidence stick to the guilty party.
I was on pins and needles as Jeff finally got to the screen where he could see the cameras.
“There he is.” Jeff pointed to a small blob in the corner or the computer screen.
“But I can’t see him. Make the image bigger and refine it, run a filter or something. You know, like they do on TV.” I said, my excitement getting the best of me.
Jeff turned around and glared at me. “I told you that that stuff they do on those CSI shows is crap. Computers don’t really work that way. This is the best its going to get. I guess I won’t be able to see the person but now I know exactly what computer it is.”
Jeff smiled at me and then turned his attention back to the computer. “So that is it?” I said, my tone laced with disappointment.
“For now, yeah. You going to bed?” Jeff said to me not even looking up from the computer.
“Well, that sucks.” I said as I turned around to leave the room and head back to bed.
But before I got back into bed, Jeff called me back into the room.
“Jen. I got him!”
“What? How?” I said as I ran back into the room, my heart racing once again with excitement.
“One of the screen shots I got was of his user name and password. When I get to work, I will compare it with the employee lists and then we should know who it is.”
“You’re so goin’ down porn guy! No one messes my husband’s bandwidth!” I said as I raised my hand in the air for a victory high five.
Jeff once again, turned around to face me and his look said it all.
“Too much?” I questioned.
“Just a tad.” He confirmed.
“Oh, sorry. Goodnight then.” I said and I walked back to the bedroom.

We had a guy get caught this way at the software company I worked at… a nasty old guy… I was there when IT sneaked up behind him and busted him. So fun.

That’s awesome! There should be some kind of computer CSI show for guys like Jeff and Tim! I watch Tim in awe when he’s writing software programs…just the things they can do with a simple computer is amazing.

Yeah, actually the guy has been fired. That in itself is a funny story too. See he rode with someone to work and then when he got there they fired him so he had to take the other guy’s car home, tell his wife that he was fired and then have her drive him and the other’s guys car back to work.

Seriously, though, a pretty similar incident happened at my hubs work. Someone was surfing for porn and some guys on the floor were bringing in playboys and hustlers. I was like…these dudes treat their workplace like a bathroom. Needless to say, one of the women did sue the company for a hostile work environment and she won. No more mags and surfing at work.
As for the fakeness of the CSI shows…I’ll just pretend I didn’t see that…I love how high-tech and awesome they are:)

lol! way to go Jeff! Hope he caught the guy…sheesh! what nerve! It makes me think of a funny internet story from my hubby…a friend/coworker was talking about sporting equipment and they were going to pull up Dick’s Sporting Goods. Well his friend (at work) just typed in www dot dicks dot com and a porn site popped up. His friend FREAKED out and just hit the power button and RAN to their manager’s office to explain. LOL!!
